Fields: A Cantata for the Peaceful Rain
This piece was premiered at the Big Top Chautauqua in 1997, featuring Ed Willett and
Cheryl Leah with “Present Music” of Milwaukee, along with Don Pavel and Jack Gunderson of the Blue Canvas Orchestra. This was recorded live by Wild Oats Recording Studio. The cantata, a multi-movement work for instrumentalists, choral, and vocal soloists, is based on a poem by Cheryl Leah. Her poem is an
exploration of nature: plant, animal, mineral, and human as it journeys through a forest’s seasonal cycle. The detail of its words and music link to the Chequamegon area’s forest and wildlife, inspired by its sights and musical themes from birdsong heard in the Chequamegon woods. Fields makes great use of Ed Willett’s immersion in classical music, using it to blend the influences of eighteenth and nineteenth century concert music with those of other styles and genres. A movement from this work, "Roses in the Hollow" was recorded by Kim Robertson with the Celtic group, Solas, on her album "The Spiral Gate", recorded by Solas Narada.
